Whether you’re looking for the perfect for the first time driver or college bound student in our life, or your just in need of a fun and economical car to get you around town, look no further than the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage GT.
Last week thanks to Drive Shop I was lucky enough to test one out for it and myself did not disappoint. Don’t let the small compact size fool you because we quickly discovered just how spacious and comfortable it was on the inside with leg space and then some both in the front and in the back.
We had more than enough room for both of the girl’s car seats in the back and the Mirage made it easy to make sure they were safely installed with a built in tether system for just that purpose. Although it can be used with 5 people, we found that it lent it self more to two in the back. And as the girls kept saying “The car is adorable.”
With its 3-cylinder engine with an automatic economy setting, the Mirage has Impressive fuel economy getting an estimated 37 mpg in town and 43 mpg on the freeway making it one of the least expensive cars available. It comes with a 5 Yr./ 60000 mile making it one of the most generous warranties around. I found even with only having a 3-cylinder engine. it was fine for the short stints of highway driving I do each day. It handled the gentle hills of Sonoma County just fine and at the end of the week, I still was on the same tank of gas that I started with which my wallet appreciated.
Easy To Handle And Turns On A Dime
Last week happened to be one of the worst weather weeks that Northern California had seen in years with flooding everywhere and many roads submerged as I quickly discovered. Not only was I able to stop the Mirage without experiencing any skidding or hydroplaning issues but when I suddenly found myself faced with unexpected areas of roads under water, I could seamlessly turn the car completely around in in one single swoop.
And had I needed to back up, the back up camera was there to guide me all the way.
Plenty of Room For All Your Cargo
Whether it was a quick trip to Target, which we all know you never come out of Target with “just one thing” or I needed to load up the girls and all of their gear, the cargo space the hatchback offered had plenty of room, as the girls tested out for themselves. The Mirage comes equipped with an automatic cover over the back storage area so there was never a second thought about the girls leaving their backpacks back there.
And as always the absolute test for us for any car that we test is “How many cup holders does it have” and I am happy to report that it easily held both of my Starbuck’s ice tea easily plus a cup holder in the center console right behind me which could be used by myself of someone in the middle of the back seat as well as holders for drinks in all four doors.
It was so refreshing that a car so compact was a 4-door model as well as the hatchback-something not often seen in autos in this size category.
All The Latest In Technology And Then Some
I loved that I could just put the car key in my pocket and never had to dig through the depths of my purse looking for the key to start the car.
The car is equipped to allow for hands-free driving with controls right on the steering wheel as well as a USB connector located within the glove box which I had never seen.
It also came equipped with a CD player which you don’t often see any more but delighted the girls so they could bring all of their Disney music on the road with us and once again, the radio and CD player could all be controlled with convenient controls right at my finger tips. Although the model I tested did not have a navigational system, it did come equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Add that with the Bluetooth capabilities, and I was good to go.
But if I had to pick my all time favorite feature, it was the seat warmer. We are talking instant warmth for the entire body on those cold Northern California mornings.
As a parent it’s a big decision as to what your child’s first car should be. You want something affordable to buy, economical to drive, yet with the reassurance that they are driving something safe and the Mirage fits all of that and more. For me, with only needing something to get grab or me to and fro the girls and go, I felt it was designed with me or my college-aged son in mind.
Fun and economical to drive, equipped with the latest in technology and equipment you’ve come to expect and want in a car, if you’re looking for the perfect compact car to get you safely to where you, or your college student to where they need to go, look no further than the 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage GT.
