On the 89th ‘birth anniversary’ of the most famous mouse in the world, here are 7 interesting things to know:
Mickey’s Rise to Stardom
Mickey Mouse debuted in the 1928 animated short film Steamboat Willie and went on to become a familiar figure at Walt Disney studios. The date when the mouse first appeared on screen, 18th November, is referred to as his birthday. The joyful mouse wearing white gloves and red shorts has starred in dozens of Disney cartoon movies and the 1940 animated feature Fantasia became one of the world’s best-known cartoon characters.
Mickey’s Imagined Height and Weight
Mickey Mouse is fancifully estimated to be standing at two feet and three inches (69 cm) and weighing 23 pounds. Mickey rose to the pinnacle of American culture and is said to be more widely recognized in other countries than anything American, apart from the US flag.
Walt Disney’s Symbol
For 87 years now, the little fictional rodent has signified The Walt Disney Company, animation, fun, goodwill, laughter and most importantly Walt Disney himself. His wife, Lillian Disney was once quoted as saying that Mickey and Walt “grew together” and were “mirrors of each other’s personality”.
Hollywood’s Walk of Fame
On November 18, 1978, on his 50th birthday, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
His red shorts most easily recognize Mickey with white buttons on it, white gloves and large yellow shoes and his round mouse ears. In most of his movies, he often gets himself into trouble that varies in seriousness as a result of his mischief and the fact that he can be forgetful, although he is very imaginative.
Fun loving and Adventurous
In his short films, Mickey often chooses fun and adventure over working, something disliked by Minnie Mouse, his girlfriend. Although he and his pals Donald and Goofy have good amount of luck, they usually end their day in failure.
Famous quotes on Mickey Mouse:
Former US President Jimmy Carter once said, “Mickey Mouse is the symbol of goodwill, surpassing all languages and cultures. When one sees Mickey Mouse, they see happiness”.
Mickey Mouse himself is often quoted as saying the following:
- “To laugh at yourself is to love yourself.”
- “Live every moment as not to regret what you are about to do.”
- “Arithmetic is being able to count up to twenty without taking off your shoes.”
- “Don’t stress over anything you can’t change.”
Walt Disney, Mickey’s creator is famous for saying the following:
- “Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age and dreams are forever.”
And Lastly, Walt Disney On Mickey Mouse:
“Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence. He was a means to an end.”
“When people laugh at Mickey Mouse, it’s because he’s so human; and that is the secret of his popularity.”
“He popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad 20 years ago on a train ride from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner.”
“Born of necessity, the little fellow literally freed us of immediate worry. He provided the means for expanding our organization to its present dimensions and for extending the medium cartoon animation towards new entertainment levels. He spelled production liberation for us.”
“We felt that the public, and especially the children, like animals that are cute and little. I think we are rather indebted to Charlie Chaplin for the idea. We wanted something appealing, and we thought of a tiny bit of a mouse that would have something of the wistfulness of Chaplin- a little fellow trying to do the best he could.”
“The life and ventures of Mickey Mouse have been closely bound up with my own personal and professional life. It is understandable that I should have sentimental attachment for the little personage who played so big a part in the course of Disney Productions and has been so happily accepted as an amusing friend wherever films are shown around the world. He still speaks for me and I still speak for him.”
“I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.”
Happy, Happy Birthday Mickey! Thank you for making all of our dreams come true!
